Johnny Appleseed will be presenting the stories of his life and times
Saturday at 3:30 on the Main Stage and Sunday at 1:30 on the Main Stage
at River Park Square.
Steve McPhall (Johnny Appleseed)
travels barefoot through all of Indiana and Illinois
at fairs and festivals from April - October each
year. Yes, he is as historically correct to the real
Johnny Appleseed as he can be, walking barefoot.
In 1986 he was awarded the Creativity Fellowship
Grant by the Eli Lilly Foundation after doing
historical characters in his history classes. He has
portrayed Johnny to hundreds of thousands of
people over the years, and he continues to walk
barefoot and meet the people who don't know
Johnny Appleseed yet.
"I guess I got into portraying Johnny Appleseed
by the back door. I was awarded a Creativity
Fellowship Grant by the Eli Lilly Foundation and after doing historical characters in my U.S. History classroom someone said, 'You could probably put Johnny on the road,' so it has been many years now of traveling as Johnny. I do lots of stage shows, strolling, and interacting with thousands and thousands of people.
Folks kind of shake their heads as I walk barefoot at some of these events but after twenty-nine years I guess I just have gotten used to doing "Johnny" as historically correct as I can.
Probably the best thing about doing Johnny are
the friendships I have developed over the years
with other participants and organizers at the
events, They are truly special."
